Right from the start A book to share with baby
'Right from the start: A book to share with your baby' has been designed for Aboriginal families to share with babies from an early age. It has been developed in consultation with many Aboriginal families and services.
It has pictures designed to appeal to babies, information for parents about baby development, and information about services for Aboriginal families. It acknowledges the importance of culture and identity, the role of extended family and has translations of key words into five Aboriginal languages.
Reading with babies gives them many of the things they need to grow and develop – closeness, feeling safe, seeing, hearing, learning sounds and gradually learning what words mean. It builds relationships and early literacy.
Yarning and sharing a book together gives babies a good start in life.
